Dr. Margriet (Meg) van Achterberg, M.D., is board-certified in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, and specializes in treating children, teens and young adults.
Dr. van Achterberg — or "Dr. Meg," as many patients call her — earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Brown University and her medical degree, with honors, from the Brown University School of Medicine. She trained in general adult psychiatry at Yale University and completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Brown University, where she was chief resident. Before founding Capitol Hill Child Psychiatry in 2014, she worked as an outpatient psychiatrist in Portland, Maine and in Washington, DC and was medical director of DC's largest nonprofit mental health agency. She is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The mission of Capitol Hill Child Psychiatry is to help children, teens, young adults and families find balance, healing, happiness, and hope in their lives. Patients see Dr. van Achterberg for anxiety, depression, behavior issues, child trauma, attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and personality disorders, along with many other mental health concerns, from developmental issues to everyday difficulties adjusting to changes in life.
Dr. van Achterberg is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and play therapy, and also provides diagnostic assessment and medication management. She works closely with children and their families to tailor treatment to their individual goals and needs.
Her office, in the heart of Capitol Hill, strives to be a warm and welcoming place.
